Built for issues, not just months

The four things that matter when you sell a magazine.

01

Print, digital, or both

Sell print, digital and a bundle as separate plans, each at its own price. A reader who moves from digital to print is credited for what they already paid, in words on the invoice.

Digital $24 · Print $48 · Both $56 a year
02

Subscriptions that count issues

A subscription can run for four or twelve issues instead of a number of months, so a late issue never costs a reader one. Each reader sees how many issues are left.

Issue 3 of 4 · 1 to go
03

A delivery list for every issue

Before an issue goes to print, export who gets it and where: active print subscribers, gift recipients, new addresses, and paused readers left out. Hand it to your printer or mail house.

04

Gifts, and renewals that ask in time

Sell a gift with a start issue and a note: the recipient gets the magazine, the giver gets the invoice. A renewal note goes out before the last issue, with a one click link.

A worked example

How a quarterly magazine with 6,200 subscribers runs on yRecurring.

The Coastal Review publishes four issues a year in print and online, to about 6,200 subscribers. Subscriptions lived in a spreadsheet next to a payment page, and before every issue someone spent two days matching who had paid against who should get a copy.

  1. 01Digital at $24, print at $48 and print plus digital at $56 a year, each counted as four issues.
  2. 02A gift plan with a start issue and a message, sold on the same checkout page as everything else.
  3. 036,200 subscribers moved over from the spreadsheet with their delivery addresses and the issues they had left.
  • Before each issue the delivery list is one export: 4,870 print addresses, gifts included, paused readers left out.
  • Renewal notes go out before the last issue, and readers renew from the link without a phone call.
  • No cut of any subscription, and the subscriber list stays theirs.

Bring your subscribers, their addresses and the issues they have left.

Upload your subscriber spreadsheet with delivery addresses and how many issues each reader has left, and check the preview line by line. Nothing is written until you approve it, and no reader gets an email about an old payment.

Questions, answered

Before you move a single customer.

Can a subscription run by issues instead of months?

Yes. Set a plan to a number of issues, say four or twelve. Each reader's subscription counts down as issues are published and renews when the last one goes out.

How do I get the list for my printer or mail house?

Before each issue, export the delivery list: every active print subscriber and gift recipient with their address, paused readers left out. It downloads as a spreadsheet your printer can use.

Can people buy a subscription as a gift?

Yes. The giver pays and gets the invoice, the recipient gets the issues from the start issue the giver picks, and a note can go with it.

Can I sell single issues and back issues?

Yes, as one off purchases on the same checkout page, next to the subscriptions.

What about readers abroad?

Price print differently for readers abroad with its own plan, add tax by region or automatically through Avalara, and let each reader pay in their own currency.

Am I locked into a contract?

No. Self serve plans are month to month, and you can export every subscriber, address and invoice any time, in open formats.
